CHANDIGARH: If Capt Amarinder Singh is to be believed, the recent case of disproportionate assets registered against him is merely the old scam packaged anew. Lashing out at Punjab vigilance bureau (VB) on Sunday, the former chief minister claimed the charges mentioned in the fresh case had already been covered under the Ludhiana City Centre case. Maintaining that under the Indian judicial system, the same case could not be tried in two courts, Amarinder said his attorney had questioned the very registration of a fresh case against him, his son and others.
He clarified that he would fight the legal battle and not take to the streets. Though support had poured in from unexpected quarters, including PPCC chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, after the case was registered against him, the former CM yet again accused her of being hand-in-glove with the Akalis.
"How can she go on participating in cricket matches and enjoying meals when the ruling Akali party let loose a reign of terror on the Congressmen in the state, he questioned. As little progress had been made in the City Centre scam, the latest case was governments way of keeping the issue alive, Amarinder alleged, adding the aim was to stall his comeback into active politics. Validating his charges, he claimed a major reshuffle in state Congress was on the cards. Again targeting Bhattal, he said apart from the Akalis, even a few Congress members were opposed to his return, suggesting these persons were also instrumental in getting the case registered against him.
Though the former CM claimed he did not aspire to be the PPCC chief, he did not forget to add the final decision was up to the Congress president. Visibly upset over the mention of his spending money on 'ladies', Amarinder Singh said, "It is absurd to suggest that I have been going around with prostitutes and ladies of ill repute. There should be some semblance of decency in politics." Of visiting Barot in Himachal Pradesh along with 'ladies' in 2003 and holding celebrations in Delhi along with foreign guests on March 2, 2007, Amarinder Singh said he had been to HP to inspect Sanan power house but no woman accompanied him there. He also dismissed the allegations of celebrating at Delhi merely three days after the party's defeat in assembly polls.
